Get Started with Email — Use the Movie Recommendation Strategy

One of the most common reasons people tell me they don’t do email marketing is because they don’t know what to write about (and they’re not confident in their writing skills).

The easiest way to get started with email marketing is to reframe how you think about it.

First and foremost, email marketing is about creating a connection and building a relationship with your subscriber.

Email marketing can be super simple or incredibly complex

What matters is that you do it and you do it consistently.

You do NOT need a complex strategy in place before you begin.

Start writing.

This is where the “Movie Recommendation” strategy comes in.

I’ve joked with people that there were a couple of movies I saw in the theater more than once (pre-pandemic). The “Avenger’s Endgame” and “The Greatest Showman” (don’t judge me 😉) that I could have convinced anyone to see.

I enjoyed them that much.

A few years prior I came up with the hashtag #everythingiscontent and started writing story-based emails with one call to action.

This is where the “Movie Recommendation” strategy comes into play.

If you were to recommend a movie you loved to a friend, what would you say to them?

  • What did you like most?
  • Who was in the movie?
  • Favorite scene?
  • How did the movie make you feel?
  • Did you like the music? (it’s amazing how music can make a break a movie)

In the case of both the movies I mentioned above, I left feeling inspired.

As a fan of show tunes (again, don’t judge me), I immediately added “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack to my Spotify library.

In this example, you’d want to include a call to action that creates the same feeling in your reader: inspiration.

Send them to a blog post, a podcast, an article from someone else, or even a tool that you have fun using and makes your life easier.

And the best way to get better at email is simply to start writing.

You can create your strategy as you go.
