Hustle & Work Ethics are Not Synonymous

I was raised by two amazing parents who both had incredible work ethics.

From their example, my siblings and I all have the same work ethic and haven’t stopped working since we started (high school).

Strong work ethics are great, but when did doing good work (the work you were hired to do) become a sacrifice of oneself?

As an American, I know we have a much more warped view of work than most of the rest of the world (watching the ease of how Costa Ricans live their life has only driven this point home for me).

Most Europeans get at least 4 weeks of vacation.

In the U.S. you’d more than likely have to be at a company for 4–5 years before you had accrued that much vacation (and good luck taking those vacation days each year).

Working yourself to the bone isn’t virtuous.

But I digress…

This isn’t about vacation time in the United States vs. the rest of the world.

It’s about the ass-backward view that if you’re NOT hustling, you must not want it very bad.

How is it we know that children need time to rest and refuel yet as adults all of the sudden we’re “less than” if we don’t want to spend every waking hour working?

I haven’t had to ask permission for time off in 14 years.

I absolutely love what I do.

And maybe it’s an age thing 😉 — which means both wisdom and a different level of energy.

I refuse to “HUSTLE” or glorify this way of life.

There will always be times when you have to put in a little extra time, work harder, or work later.

However, that should be the exception, not the rule.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.”
